ITPME's About Me - Security Consultant

Who am I and why should you listen to me? Good question.

As a security consultant, I specialize in personal security, preserving privacy and protecting against identity theft. I partner with an inter-
national security company that operates in Europe and Asia. I am American and based in America.

I've always been interested in security and privacy - can't really say when it started but it definitely intensified when I was earning my electronic engineering degree and discovered how fascinating computers and other wired and wireless electronic gadgets were while at the same time finding out how difficult it was to maintain much personal security and any amount of privacy in our high-tech environment and society.

I've also learned that being a victim of identity theft can be so devastating that the one who experiences it can truly appreciate having assistance easily spelled out for them.

Has it ever happened to me? You bet. Not even a security consultant is immune. I've been a victim of credit card fraud...stolen check fraud...mail fraud...a victim of an inside hack job at a prominent financial institution...and, just to round things out, I've also been a victim of identity theft involving the IRS. In only one of those cases did I know who did it and how they obtained my information - which is why prevention and protection are both necessary because you just don't know from which direction you'll be hit.

Even being a victimized security consultant wasn't protection against being hassled by creditors and I was even on a "bad check writers" list even though the fraud perpetrated against me didn't involve writing a check! It took months to clear all that up. I had to deal with unsympathetic people who often refused to provide much in the way of details of the crime against me and I was even treated like the criminal instead of the victim.

Of course I take all my own security consultant advice now and haven't had any problems since. But I am not complacent and I stay ever vigilant as new crimes and scams are always being thought up.

Why a website?

As I interacted with more and more people as a security consultant, it became obvious that most people are unaware of the nature and extent of the dangers to which they are ever increasingly exposed. So I decided the best way to reach a broad audience and increase awareness was to create a website.

So how do I do it?

My experience as a security consultant and personally, with my own identity theft, just proves my theory that while you can do much to avoid being a soft target and prevent becoming an identity theft victim, you really need to couple that prevention with protection by doing regular background checks on yourself, monitoring your credit report monthly and having some sort of insurance plan that has comprehensive restoration services in place to restore your name after you've been hit with identity theft.
